January–March: the herds gather on the southern Serengeti's short-grass plains around Ndutu to calve — the best window for cheetah and lion sightings. April–May: the long rains bring the lowest prices and the quietest parks as the columns start moving north and west. June: the first big river crossings happen at the Grumeti in the western Serengeti.
July–October: the migration reaches Kenya's Maasai Mara, and the famous Mara River crossings peak in August and September — this is peak safari season. November–December: the short rains turn the herds south again toward the Serengeti to begin the cycle anew.
