Who Are the Maasai?
The Maasai are a Nilotic ethnic group inhabiting southern Kenya and northern Tanzania — approximately 1.5 million people known for their red shuka wraps, elaborate beadwork, and the adumu jumping dance.
The Age-Set System
Maasai society is organised around age-sets. The most well-known stage is the moran (warriors) aged roughly 15–30, responsible for protecting the community and cattle.
Maasai Beadwork — A Language in Colour
Every beadwork piece is made by women and carries social information. Red = bravery; white = purity; blue = water; green = land; black = the people. When you buy directly from the maker, you support a living craft tradition.
How to Engage Respectfully
- Ask before photographing individuals
- Remove shoes before entering a homestead
- Accept offered food and drink — refusing is impolite
- Choose community-run visits over tourist shows
